Tips for SAT and ACT Test Day

Tips include knowing what you’re permitted to bring, wearing a layered outfit, reading through directions twice, avoid rushing the multiple choice, and more.

If you’re applying to college, you may need to submit scores from the SAT® or ACT® as part of your application. We have seven key study tips to follow as your prepare for the exam. And once you’re close to test day, follow our guidance below to ensure you perform to the best of your ability.

  1. Don’t try to cram or stay up late studying the night before the test. You’re better off being well-rested than knowing one or two extra test-related tidbits.
  2. Check to make sure your alarm is set correctly so you don’t oversleep.
  3. Eat a sufficient breakfast the morning of the test.
  4. Know exactly what you’re permitted to bring to the test. Remember your admission ticket, approved calculator, photo ID, and watch.
  5. If the test is being held somewhere other than your own school, be sure to check the location/directions before the morning of the test so you don’t get lost. And plan some extra time to find your way around an unfamiliar building
  6. Wear a layered outfit. Some test centers are freezing, others are way too hot. Wear something that allows you to adjust accordingly.
  7. Bring snacks. Granola bars and trail mix are great for test day. Nourish yourself like you’re going for a hike.
  8. Be sure to listen carefully to the instructions, particularly about how to fill out the answer form.
  9. Read through directions at least twice before starting on a test section to ensure you understand them.
  10. Read each individual question slowly and thoroughly.
  11. Manage your time wisely. Figure out what types of questions will take you the longest and be sure to give them enough time.
  12. Avoid getting bogged down on difficult questions that can cause you to use up all your time. Do your best and move on.
  13. Don’t rush through multiple choice. Force yourself to read each possible choice carefully before selecting an answer. Remember, some choices appear correct at first glance but turn out to be wrong when you take a closer look.
  14. Some sections will ask you to read a passage and answer a few questions based on what you read. The correct answer will always come from the passage. Don’t get distracted by answers that are not included in the passage text.
  15. Use the resources provided. The SAT includes the math formulas right on the test (but be warned that the ACT does not).
  16. Remember to relax and take deep breaths throughout the test.
  17. After the test, take a few moments to jot down anything notable from your test experience (timing challenges, surprises, sections that felt easier than usual). This will be helpful information if you retake the test in the future.
