Our mission of college affordability since our founding has been to help Massachusetts students and families access and afford higher education and reach financial goals through education programs, tax-advantaged savings plans, low-cost loans, and expert guidance. We have enriched our mission through our work as a state sponsor of the Attainable Savings Plan℠, created to help individuals with disabilities save for disability-related expenses. All of our work aligns with our ever-present goal to support the independence, growth, and success of Massachusetts residents.

A Tradition of Service

The Massachusetts state legislature created MEFA in 1982 at the request of colleges and universities across the state. From the start, our mandate has been to offer low-cost college financing to families of aspiring college students.

Unparalleled Expertise

Founded more than 35 years ago, MEFA is the Massachusetts authority on planning, saving, and paying for college. Our dedicated professionals — drawing on vast experience and insight — work closely with families, community organizations, high schools, and colleges to help students achieve their goals.

Essential Guidance

Our integrated college-planning program reaches across Massachusetts and is an important contributor to the Commonwealth’s status as a leader in higher education. MEFA strives to increase awareness of financial aid opportunities and college funding options, and to help make college more affordable through:

  • Informative live seminars on a range of topics related to higher education
  • Comprehensive online resources that make it easy to get assistance
  • Collaboration with college counselors and higher education professionals designed to improve our services to students and families

Versatile Products and Services

MEFA offers access to powerful and affordable financial products to help students pay college expenses. These college funding options include the U.Plan Prepaid Tuition Program, the U.Fund College Investing Plan, Undergraduate Loans, Graduate Loans, and an Education Refinancing Loan — all designed to help bring the goal of a college education within reach. We also provide the Attainable Savings PlanSM, designed to help families save for the expenses of eligible individuals with disabilities. And finally, we offer the Commonwealth’s free college and career planning portal, MEFA Pathway Your Plan for the Future, to help students and their families plan for post-secondary success.

An Eye on the Future

As the need for reliable, accessible information and assistance continues to grow, MEFA will explore new ways to encourage and support college aspirations and promote a culture of higher education in Massachusetts.
