Word of the Day Wednesday: Financial Aid Office
Each Wednesday, MEFA features a Word of the Day, where we highlight a word (or sometimes a phrase) related to the college planning process. This month, we're focusing on vocabulary related to the components of the financial aid offer.
Today's Word of the Day is: Financial Aid Office.
The financial aid office is the office responsible for reviewing the financial aid applications of prospective and current students and putting together the financial aid offers. As high school seniors spend the next few days making final decisions on where to attend college next year, the financial aid office can serve as an important resource, answering such questions as:
- How will my financial aid change from year to year?
- How do private scholarships fit into my financial aid offer?
- Are there renewal requirements for my financial aid?
Once the decision has been made of where to attend college, the financial aid office can continue to answer questions and give valuable information on how to pay the college bill. They can provide answers to:
- Where can I sign up for a payment plan?
- Will we receive the bill by mail or email?
- When should I apply for private loans?
Many financial aid offices assign staff members to assist students based on their last name or home state.. A family should ask to speak to or meet with their designated financial aid officer – as that person should have the best knowledge of the family's financial situation.
Why does this matter to you?
If someone in your family is heading to college next year, it's important to understand the offices and staff members on hand to provide assistance. The financial aid office can offer insight into the financial aid you've been offered as well as the other resources available to help you pay for college. You can find contact information for a financial aid office on the college's website. If you have general questions about financial aid or paying the college bill, connect with us here at MEFA.
