Learn about the application process.
Applying for financial aid may seem complicated, but it's fairly straightforward if you break it down step by step. To get oriented, look at a detailed financing college calendar for a sense of what happens when.

Step 1: Learn about financial aid.
Step 2: Complete the pre-application requirements.
Step 3: Apply for financial aid.
Step 4: Receive your award letters.
Step 5: Determine how you'll pay for the rest.


  • Don't miss deadlines!
  • You may estimate your income if necessary in order to meet your deadlines, but be as accurate as possible as your figures will affect the tentative award you receive. You'll have to correct the information later.
  • Keep copies of everything, including tax forms and W-2s.
  • Write clearly and legibly.
  • Remember, when the forms ask for your name and your social security number they are referring to "you," the student, not the parent.
